News: Woman scammed by fake astronaut who said he needed money to return to Earth

Post by Sysop »

In a romance scam which started on Instagram, a woman says that she was scammed out of $30,000 by sending money to a person claiming to be an astronaut on the International Space Station.

According to the Daily Mail, the scammer setup his Instagram profile to make it appear as-though he was a Russian astronaut aboard the ISS (International Space Station).

The scammer allegedly lured the victim over to the LINE instant messaging app while claiming that he had limited connectivity aboard the ISS.

After a few weeks, the scammer professed his love for the victim and told her that he wished to get married to her in Japan upon returning back to earth.

He then requested that his victim help him by paying a 'landing fee' of approximately 30,000 USD.

The victim decided to file a report with Japanese police, who are reportedly investigating the case which has been described as a bizarre example of romance fraud.

Although this is funny, romance fraud is not a joke. If you suspect that yourself or a family/friend might be falling victim to romance fraud, then consider hiring a private investigator to conduct checks for you. Above all, remember to never send money to someone that you have not met in real life.
